The third of four million-sellers which the couple wrote for the Everly's, the others being "Bye Bye Love", which reached No.2 in the American chart in 1957, "Wake Up Little Susie", and "Bird Dog", which topped the U.S. charts in 1958. It was the brothers' first No.1 seller in the U.K., staying there an amazing seven weeks.

The Bryants claim to have written the song in fifteen minutes.

Versions by Richard Chamberlain ( 1963 ) and a Glen Campbell / Bobbie Gentry duo ( 1970 ) also made the U.S.Top Thirty.
